The “F. Eusebio” City Archeological and Natural Sciences Museum is the authentic treasure chest of the city of Alba and the hills of Langhe and Roero surrounding it on every side. Its wine-growing landscapes, together with those of the Monferrato area, have been inscribed in the World Heritage List by UNESCO (50th Italian site) in 2014.
Re-organized in 2000 with modern and concise exhibition criteria, the Eusebio museum is housed in the old town, in the middle of the medieval skyline of the “City of a Hundred Towers”, in an area of the historic Maddalena church complex (via Vittorio Emanuele II 19, inside the Maddalena courtyard, last door on the right).
Its halls hold the legacy of the millennial history of the city, from its beginnings dating back to the 6th millennium BC (the prehistoric village was a fundamental station of Northern Italy Neolithic) culminating in its periods of greatest splendor, as when under the Roman domination it assumed the name of Alba Pompeia, or when, in the last centuries of the Middle Ages, it was a Free Municipality.
Founded in 1897 by the Alba citizen Federico Eusebio, professor of Latin Literature at the University of Genoa, the museum had a single exhibition hall at first; but over the years, it has grown exponentially, as a result of a collective research of the roots of the territory, coming to the current 21 exhibition halls.
The sections of physical anthropology, not usually open to the public, the city’s archaeological itinerary, with 32 overground and underground stop-overs, equipped nature trails along the river Tanaro banks and the hills of Langhe and Roero, as well as the many temporary exhibitions that the museum hosts every year, are added to the three permanent sections of prehistoric archeology, Roman archeology and natural sciences (including palaeontology and geology, zoology, botany).
